This large 15th Century castle was the last fortress to surrender to Elizabethan forces during the Desmond rebellion. The castle tower was built by the Fitzmaurices, Lords of Kerry, in the 15th Century. Today only part of the castle remains but it is still a substantial historic building to visit. During the rebellion, when besieged, a tunnel was dug beneith the castle to weaken its walls; the remnants of this 'mine' were recently found.
