It's not the ruin itself that is rusty, but the corrugated iron roof. The red paint also helps with the illusion of more rust. These wonderful old ruins of one-roomed houses can still be seen in many places in Ireland. I know of a couple that were still inhabited as late as the 1990s.

Corfe castle dates to the 11th century, although evidence exists of some form of stronghold predating the Norman Conquest. Construction of a stone hall and inner bailey wall occurred in the 11th century by the 13th century the castle was being used as a royal treasure storehouse and prison. The castle remained a royal fortress until sold by Elizabeth I in the 16th century to her Lord Chancellor. The Castle was captured in 1646. After its capture, the castle was destroyed with some explosives to ensure that it could never stand again as a Royalist stronghold. In the centuries that followed, the local populace took advantage of this easy source of building material and masonry; door frames and other items originally from the castle can be seen in a number of nearby houses.
After the restoration of the monarchy in 1660, the Bankes family regained their properties. Rather than rebuild the ruined castle they built a new house at Kingston Lacy, near Wimborne Minster in Dorset. In the 1980s, Ralph Bankes bequeathed the entire Bankes estate to the National Trust, including Corfe Castle and much of Corfe village.

We are proud to note that RYAN TUBRIDY, our much loved and esteemed TV & Radio celebrity, chose this image for his home. This picture showing a beautiful carpet of bluebells was chosen by Ryan when his radio show was broadcast from the Golf, Hotel, Ballybunion. Others who have purchased the image have said that it feels as though you could reach in a pick a flower.

The woods at Ballyseedy and Muckross have some beautiful flora, but the bluebells would seem to have taken a bit of a knock of late, probably owing to the heavy frosts we have had the last couple of years.
